Categories

Useful Information for Classifieds Categories Management (Admin)
Each category can have multiple subcategories; however subcategories cannot have sub-categories. In other words you can have a parent category with children but the children cannot then have children.

When deleteing multiple categories, checking “Delete Ads if any” only applies to ads within the specific category being deleted. In other words, if the category has children categories and the children categories have ads those ads will not be deleted.

When a parent category is deleted children categories are automatically moved to the category with ID 1 if you do not specify a new parent category. If no category with ID 1 exists such a category will be created and the category will be named “Untitled”.

The category with ID 1 is treated like your default category so you might want that category to have a more general title.

In the case where children categories are deleted, any ads contained are moved to the parent unless you check “Delete Ads if any”.

When you delete children categories, if the children categories have ads the ads are moved to the parent category unless you specify a category.

The best way to use the multiple category deletion tool and the mass-move category tool is to move or delete related categories because you can only specify one move-to category.

I was wondering how I could show the parent catagories without the child catagories being shown under them…. Is this possible, Any hellp would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys for all of your hard work.

  • admin says:

Not without editing code at this time James, but will look into making this a possibility down the line.

I assume its the same with what I’m looking at, but is it possible to have top level categorys be not selectable?

So, for example, I might have a top level of “Instruments” and sub categorys of “Guitar, Piano” etc. Could I set it so people have to select a specific instrument?

  • James says:

Never mind, I found it in the options (Ad/Listing Settings) there is a check box for “Prevent ads from being posted to top level categories?”

Any chance of being able to ad a description to the category or sub category?

I’d like to be able to guide what people are putting in the ads also when you “Browse” you do not know which category you are in as you just get “Browse Categories” as a page title.

Would be nice to have a true category title or breadcrumbs for easier navigation.

A category description sounds like a good idea but probably isn’t something I can add right now. It would not be a small in-and-out change.

I suppose it is the icing on the cake.
Can you keep it in mind if you do a major overhaul?

  • admin says:

@TheType, yes, I will keep it in mind for when I do a major overhaul. Thank you for the suggestion.

The default categories page has 2 columns, how do I change it to 3 or 4 columns?

  • xavier says:

How to use the default wordpress categories rather than creating the plugin?

  • awpcp says:

    Hi Xavier,

The plugin uses its own categories, there’s no way to use the “default ones” in WordPress.

Enabling a sub category to have a sub category would be appreciated if possible.
Apart from this minor problem it’s 100% for your plugin, It’s fantastic.

    Keep up your excellent work!

How do you reorder the categories on the main page? Just the layout…it is defaulting to two columns and weird spacing

  • awpcp says:

    Hi TC,

The plugin now supports category ordering from inside the admin panel. The layout issues will need to be dealt with through your theme and CSS, but the physical order of the categories is controllable through the plugin now.

    Hi,

The Classified pack is excellent but unfortunately it don’t work well with my favourate templete. I used the templete because I have donated to the creator.

Any soultion for the this plug in to the existing templete before I donate to the creator ?

  • awpcp says:

    Hi,

You can always play with the CSS of the plugin to try and improve the behavior of AWPCP with your template, but in general, AWPCP plays well with most templates. If you have a specific CSS issue, bring it to the support forum: http://forum.awpcp.com.
